THE PRESENT IS UNBEARABLE, MOVING FORWARD IS THE ONLY VIABLE OPTION:
The TPLF/EPRDF and its cohorts want to maintain the status quo. When coming to power, they seemed to have recognized some historical injustices, but they remained committed to ensure longevity of their illegitimate power through everyday injustice for the last 25 years. They seemed willing to recognize the rights of nations and nationalities in constitutional terms but remained determined to deny people the capability to exercise those rights. They repeatedly failed to deliver their promises and, through time, have completely lost people’s trust.
#OromoProtests (and now other regions are uprising against injustice) may have awakened them to the grim reality that the people cannot live with failed promises of democracy, development, and justice anymore. The Gonder uprising is yet another example signifying this. Yet the TPLF/EPRDF officials are unwilling to make changes that may compromise their absolute political and economic control. They have never been accountable for their outrageous actions and words. There is no room to exercise democratic rights the country’s constitution guarantees. The abuse of power for political and economic gains of a minority is widespread throughout the country. They blamed (and continue to blame) previous regimes for discrimination based on ethnic identity, but imposed their version of discrimination along ethnic line, except that they made it even more discernible to the public across the country. In such a context, there is no option left to the people except continuing the struggle for justice, democracy and equality. Targeting the regime’s business interests in all possible ways should continue as part of the resistance. #OromoProtests #AmharaProtests #EthiopiaProtests.
